One of my all-time favorite books. It changes slightly every time I read it, as my perspective on relationships among people change. Yes, there is a strong whiff of the "kind massah" about the whole thing, but I don't think that takes away from the brilliancy of the characters, and it shouldn't preclude anyone from reading the novel. And to be fair, Scarlett is not such a kind massah; why her black folks stay with her I'll never understand - although I don't live in a servant-based society, so there's that. Y'anyway, READ THIS BOOK. Then let it marinate for a year or two and READ IT AGAIN. Believe me, it stands up.
